Description:
Electrostatics: The electron and charge quantization Millikan's experiment. Coulomb's Law, Gauss's Law. Electrostatic field and potential. Electric fields of line, surface and volume charge distributions. Electrostatic energy. Capacitance. Laplace's equation. Poisson's equation. Solution for simple geometries e.g. plance diode.

Conductivity: Current densities, mean free path and relaxation time. Ohm's law, Jolule's law.

DC Circuits: EMF, Kirchoff's Law. Solution of networks. Circuit theorems: Superposition, reciprocity, Thevenin theorem, power transfer. Bridges and Potentiometers.

Magnetostatics: Origin of the the magnetic Field Lorentz force relation. Ampere's Law, Fields of current distributions, straight wire, circular loop, current sheets. Magnetic energy - coefficients of self and mutual induction. Energy of assembly of circuits.
Electromagnetic Induction: Faraday - Leuz laws for moving and stationary circuits. Eddy currents, displacement currents. Maxwell's equations in integral form.

AC Circuits: Currents in inductors and capacitors. Complex representation for sinusoidal wave oscillations. Natural electrical Oscillation in LC circuits. LRC circuits reactance, impedance and admittance PMS values of current and voltage. Power factor, dissipation factor. Impedance matching.

Assessment is by assignments and examination.
